THERE'S SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC

“I just saw it, I swear.” Said Henry to his father. “Don’t say a thing, I know very well that you lie every time.” Henry with walked into his room, angry at his father, he kicked his cupboard making all of his toys fall on the floor, creating a lot of mess. His father came in, anger was all over his face, “Clean all this mess, I’m warning you, any more lies and you will stay in your room the whole day.” Henry started to reply but seeing his father’s face, he only said, “Yes father.” Henry could not forget those eyes he had seen in the attic, red and angry eyes, but his father would not have any of it. He sat on his bed and looked out of the window, he was tired of the long day he had had and wanted to get some sleep, but sleep would not come. Nobody believed him, everyone thought that all he said were lies. But he wasn’t, many times he would lie, but today he was not lying. He was very sure about it, and he would go to the attic again to check who was in the attic.

He started playing video games on his PSP, his favorite game, and he was a pro at it nobody could beat his high score. He was deep inside his game and was about to make a new high score, when he heard foot steps in the attic. The planks were making crunching noise, someone was walking from one side of the attic to the other. The footsteps were getting faster ever time he walked one corner of the attic. Soon whoever it was, was running and he was sure his parents were up as well, and he was right, not long after this thought, his father opened the door and looked troubled. His father and his mother walked in and closed the door, Henry ran to his father and hugged him. His father sat on his bed and said, “I think I need to go to thr attic, whoever it is joking with us, this is not a good joke. “Just when his father got up to go to the attic, the running stopped. He walked out of the room but returned not long after, “Ithink I should check the attic, there must be cast or some other animal.” He left the room before anyone could say anything, Henry’s mother sat beside him, consoling him. After some time he returned, “There was nothing up there but the small glass window was broken, it must have been an animal. A cat I presume, must have been running around for rats.

Days and weeks passed after that incident, life was as normal as it could get. Henry was going to school everyday, his father and mother to their respective offices and his house was normal again as he was not seeing any eyes in the attic anymore. But it did not go for long, one day he came home early and heard those steps again, he could hear people talking to each other and children laughing, he felt like sitting in a park. He went to the hall and brought the stairs down to get up the attic. He went up the attic, looked around himself but couldn’t see anyone and the sounds stopped. He went down and back to his room, but before he sat on his bed to lie down a bit he heard those sounds again. He walked back to the hall, he brought the stairs down and was about to climb up, the door of the hall opened, giving him a tiny heart attack, his father walked in, “What are you doing?” He stepped back, “I heard noises up there.” His father walked to him and closed the attic door again. “Go back to your room, one day you see eyes and the other day you hear noises. Stop doing this, Did you put the cat up there last night?” Henry was taken aback and confused, his father thought that he was the one who put the cat, or whatever it was, in the attic.

The day went otherwise normal, except the sounds he had heard in the attic and the blame from his father that he was lying about those sounds, and that he had put a cat in the attic as his idea of a joke. He was confused all the time, he did not understand why his father did not believe him. He walked in the park and looked at the others playing, he was not in the mood to play. He wanted to find out who or what it is in the attic, he sat on a bench and looked at his friends walk towards him. He knew they were coming to ask him to play, but he was in no mood. “Hey, what’s wrong? Don’t want to play?” He shook his head and said, “No, you guys play. I don’t feel so well.” His friends walked away with angry faces, his best friend sat beside him and said, “Is it the same thing you talked about in the class?” Sean was the only one to whom he had talked about the incident of the other night. He nodded, his other friends were all getting ready to play and were calling Sean, who gave no heed to them, he just looked at Henry and said, “Do you think… it could be ghosts.” If it was a normal day Henry would have laughed, but today he wouldn’t have laughed even if Sean had said it might be aliens. What he had heard up there, Sean might as well have been right but if Sean was right, then there might as well be a whole colony of them, because he had heard many voices, voices of children, men and women. This thought gave him chills, what if they were dangerous and tried to hurt him and his parents.
