SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC
Down in their room, Henry’s parents had heard the worst wail of their lives, they felt the hair on their body stand. The wail had gone for a second or two but it was still ringing in their ears and they could not take it out of their minds. All Henry’s father could think of was Henry, he ran towards his room while his wife right behind him. He reached the door and looked inside, and felt fear surge through his body. Henry was missing, he looked at his wife who was shaking.
Rather than consoling her he ran upstairs and before he could even think of anything, he was in the attic, and he could feel the pressure inside the attic like someone was crushing him, the cold made it even worse, he felt like he had jumped in a frozen lake and `was trapped beneath the ice, he could not breath. He saw Henry fallen on the other corner of the attic and for a second, he thought he saw someone’s shining scary eyes. Not caring about that, he walked towards Henry, he reached him and picked him up, he felt his skin, which was cold as ice. He walked towards the door and brought Henry down, with the help of his wife.
He picked him up and said, “Hurry and James, he is cold as ice.” his wife did as she was told, he took Henry to his room and put him on the bed after putting two blankets on him, he turned on the heater. Not long after that, his wife came and directly went to Henry’s bedside. “What happened to him, Arthur.” Arthur looked outside if the doctor was here, though he knew that his wife had just called and it would take James about twenty minutes to reach, he then walked to his wife and said, “I don’t know, he was unconscious and the attic was as cold as a freezer.” His wife had a sharp intake of breath and said, “Do you think it is true, what he says about these ghosts?” she sat beside Henry on the bed and kissed him on the forehead, Arthur realized that she was shaking as well.
He went towards her and took her in his arms, she started to cry on his chest. Not long after that, he heard the doctor’s car arrive. He walked out of the room to the hall to open the door for the doctor. The effects of sleep were apparent on the doctor, but he was a friend and Arthur could not think of anyone else who would come at this time of the night. “Arthur.” Said the doctor shaking Arthur’s hand, he felt the cold and fear in Arthur. James looked concerned and said, “What happened?” They walked upstairs while Arthur told him everything about the night. He knew if it had been some other doctor, he would have called a mental asylum and had taken Henry or even him, but luckily, James was his friend and a close one.
James walked to Henry’s bed, seeing James Henry’s mother left his side and let James sit on his bed. He checked his temperature and his pulse, then stood up and said, “He has a low pulse rate and a high fever. He does not need to be taken to the hospital though but his fever is very high and he needs to rest, I’ll write down some medicines, he will be fine.” James sat down on a chair and was about to ask something to Arthur, when Henry started mumbling. Arthur stood up and went to Henry’s side and lowered himself towards Henry, while his wife sat beside him. James stood right behind Arthur and tried to make out what he said from where he was. “Sheeee….issss…ssheeee….shhheee” he was shaking, his eyes were closed but he sounded scared, “What is it, Henry.” He became silent and said, very clearly, he was shaking but he still was as clear as he was any other time, “She is here.” After saying that he shouted, so loudly that Arthur had to put his hands on his ears. It sounded like the same wail he had heard but this was with Henry’s voice and the one he heard earlier was the voice of a woman.
Arthur looked at James and said above Henry’s wails, “Do something, give him an injection to make him unconscious.” James opened his bag and rummaged through it to find the profopol injection, it did not take much time for that. He hit the injection and not long after that the drug started to show effects. Arthur, frustrated from all this sat down on the floor and started to breath heavily, James gave him a glass of water from the jug on the bedside table, then gave some to Helen, after drinking some himself he sat down. He had never heard someone shout like that, he was still having goosebumps and his hands were shaking like crazy, he felt cold even though the heater was on.
He looked outside the window and the sky was getting brighter, he needed to take him to a hospital, but what hospital would treat him and with what medicine. He would be assigned to a mental hospital and James did not want that. Henry was a good kid, he was always happy and full of laughter, he did not want that to happen with him. His illness did not seem like a normal mental illness, no man, even insane, would say those words and shout like that. He did not believe in ghosts and spirits, but what he saw now seemed like the work of a spirit. His hands were shaking like crazy, and he could think of nothing but the shout he had heard, he had never seen any child of that age shout like that. He had not seen anyone in his life shout like that, no matter the pain or anger, this shout was that of anger.
