He didn’t stay in the city because, a party from his village had left for the city two days before Lakmeer’s departure, since his father was the one who would take everything that was produced in the village and sold it in the city but now after his father’s disappearance, they had to sell the village goods in desert’s way as his uncle had forbidden them to go further than that due to the war. So he could not go to the city because if he did go and if they had seen him so they would not have let him go and taken him back to the village.
Due to the same reason he avoided to use the road, and instead of the road he took a secret way his father had shown him, it was steeper than the normal road and very dangerous. Because warhorses are not made for climbing and if his horse had broken a leg or something, his journey would have finished before it had even started. But he had to take one risk to avoid the other, so he chose to avoid his villagers.
Lakmeer didn’t know exactly where the city named Gordor was, but he was told by his father that it was by the end of the snake’s road. The snake’s road started at the far end of the country and ended in the capital. He had spent nearly all his life looking down at snake’s road from his spot. He knew it more than anyone who travelled through it.
All he had to do was take the road and the snake’s road would take him to Gordor within a fortnight. He wondered why everyone was so scared of going to Gordor, during the whole journey, he had not even seen one person on the road who would attack him. He had not seen anyone at all, the road was totally deserted, “Maybe there is no war and everyone is just scared because someone had lied to them, and our villagers would believe anything.” He thought, but again a thought came to him, that where was his father if everything was alright.
He urged the horse to go faster and within no time he was faster than anything that ever existed, faster than the diving eagle, faster than a leopard catching its prey, faster than anything and everything. He liked the air touching his face, his silky hair was moving with the air, like the waves of the sea, he felt like the warrior he always wanted to be, the brave warrior who fights for the truth. This all pleasance took him back in the old days with his father, cantering along the snake’s road, and whooping. His father was urging him to go faster and was smiling happily at Lakmeer as he cantered faster every minute. Before he knew it his eyes became wet. But he didn’t cry, because a grown man never cries, he had seen his father with tears in his eyes. So tears were no problem.
He was totally in a world of his own, was thinking about the good old days and was enjoying the greenery, the wind in his hair and the feel of it on his face, it was heavenly. Though it was miles from his village, but it felt like home. He touched the hilt of his sword and said, “As long as this deadly beauty is with me, I will always be home and safe.”
Since leaving the village, he had said this sentence more than he himself could count, and he was very good at counting. He used this sentence to motivate himself and make himself feel safer. He slept hugging the sword every night and this sentence kept him motivated every night. This was his night’s story before sleeping and this sentence was his friend apart from the horse and the sword, none of whom could talk. While this sentence was the friend that motivates you to choose what you love. It did the same for Lakmeer.
But today someone disturbed him from his motivation, he heard someone call for help as he was in his thoughts and in no time there was someone standing on his way, he was going very fast and stopping at this speed was hard but he was good with horses, actually he was good at anything, he stopped his horse and looked at the man standing in front of his horse.
He was very scared, and was pointing towards the trees and kept saying,” My friend.” He didn’t seem to have any weapon so Lakmeer thought it would be safe to assume he needed help, so he got off his horse and unsheathed his sword and said to the man,” what is it, is your friend in danger?” The man kept looking at his sword but said nothing. So he had to ensure him that he was not a hostile. The man again pointed towards the trees and said,” My friend he was attacked by a bear.” He had never seen a bear, there were no bears in the desert, but no bear could scare him, he could handle a bear, after all he was a brave warrior now, who had travelled miles and miles alone. And he had vowed to fight for the truth, saving a man from a hostile bear was a good thing.
He took the rein of his horse, unsheathed his sword and followed the man, as the horse followed him. The man went inside the woods, but didn’t say anything and kept going when he looked behind, the road was barely visible. He didn’t want to be a lost warrior, as a lost warrior couldn’t help anyone when he himself needed help to find the road.
When he looked at the man, he stopped and Lakmeer went ahead of him to see what was wrong, but there was nothing just the normal path. He looked behind him and saw that there were more people coming. There were five of them with the man who had brought him here, they were all smiling with dirty teeth. He knew that he will not be able to kill all of them, but he would rather die trying than give up. He held his sword between him and the unknown men with his horse behind him.
He looked at them in the eye and said,” I may not be able to kill you all but I will take some of you with me.” They all laughed at them while one of them came forward lazily, Lakmeer went forward to give him a deadly blow in the face but the attacker lazily met his steel with Lakmeer’s and Lakmeer’s sword went flying and fell in the grass. Then the attacker punched him in the face and everything went dark around him.
