Eddie was right, they arrived at the city before the sun was down and they even found a descent inn. They ate and then they slept. The Inn was not like the village, neither as comfortable a sleep nor as good food as the deer in the village. But it was better than sleeping in the jungle and eating raw rabbits, cooked by Lykos. Eddie had slept in the room with Lykos and Lakmeer while Henry and Othor had slept in another.
Lakmeer and the other two got up, Eddie went to wake Henry and Othor. Lakmeer and Lykos got ready and they went to the dining hall which was nearly full. They found an empty table and went to it but just when they were sitting somebody pushed Lakmeer and sat there saying,” Oh I’m sorry were you two going to sit here?” and then came four of his other friends, one of them said,” You might want to find some other place”. Lakmeer knew it might get ugly, because he might stay silent for that but Lykos wouldn’t. That is exactly what happened, Lykos stopped Lakmeer when he was about to move, and said,” No, you will find some other place.”
The one that had pushed Lakmeer looked at Lykos with eyes that said” You don’t know who you are messing with” and said,” Now now pretty boy, you wouldn’t want a scar on your pretty face, let’s say the one that goes from one corner of the face to the other, would you now.” His friends began to laugh, all but one who kept staring at Lykos with a scared face. Lykos went for his sword but the owner of the inn interrupted and said,” Please sirs we don’t want no blood in our inn, take it ou’side.” Lykos didn’t put his hand off of the hilt but he didn’t take his sword out as well.
But the band of six sitting on the table wouldn’t have it, the one that pushed Lakmeer seemed to be their leader, he went for his sword but he was stopped by the man who seemed to be scared of Lykos for some reason. They began to speak in hushed voices, the scared man said something to his leader, this shocked him and he said something back. The man nodded and the leader stood up and so did the others.
He stood up respectively and spoke very politely to Lykos, like a soldier would to his senior officer and said,” We are very sorry for our rash behavior to you, Mr. bandit’s bane.” Saying this he and his other friends bowed and took their leave. Leaving Lakmeer in confusion. But just when Lakmeer thought it wouldn’t get any more confusing, the owner of the inn bowed and said,” It’s an honor for us to receive you Mr. Bandit’s bane, what would you have of us.” This didn’t seem to move Lykos and not his attitude at all he said sitting on the bench,” For now I would have the best of your food today and something to wash it down.” The owner bowed and ordered for the best cooked mutton chops and the best wine the inn could offer. Lakmeer kept stared Lykos and he didn’t know if he should ask him the reason for all this respect, or was it fear, and why were they calling him bandit’s bane.
Not long after, the other three came to the table and food for them was ordered as well. Lakmeer didn’t bring up the subject. At least not now, not with the other three. He would ask him when their party splits, when Eddie leaves for the village Henry and Othor were going as well, so they would be a party of two again. After they were all fed well enough and they paid, through the protests of the owner saying he couldn’t take money from friends of the bandit’s bane. But when Lykos stared at him angrily the owner took the money and didn’t speak again. The three later started to talk about it when they got out of the city gates.
“It was strange, the way the owner of the inn was treating us and calling us friends of some man named bandit’s bane.” Said Henry.” Yes, it was. And even refusing to take the money. What owner would do that. They would take money even if they had to jump into the fire.” Added Othor. “They would jump into fire for money yes, but not from the bandit’s bane, they wouldn’t.” concluded Eddie. Lakmeer and the other two looked at Eddie with puzzled faces. And Lakmeer couldn’t stop himself asking, ”Who is The bandit’s bane.” Saying this he saw Lykos move uneasily on his horse. Eddie began, ”It might have been a year ago, that I was traveling to a village, for the same purpose. On the way I saw five naked castrated bodies, they had cuts all over their bodies that said they were dead before they were hanged.”
Lakmeer couldn’t stop but interrupt,” Why would anyone hang someone who is already dead?” It was not Eddie who answered, it was Lykos,” For humiliating them.” Lakmeer kept his quiet and Eddie continued,” The tree on which they were, on its stem the word “bandits” was carved by a dagger or a sword. I described this situation to the villagers and they said that it wasn’t the first time that a whole band of bandits was hanged to a tree, there had been many other times as well. No one has seen him, except for some. But this is for sure no one knows his real name, they just call him “The bandit’s bane”. Lakmeer couldn’t help but look at Lykos, he had done the same with the bandits who had taken him hostage.
