They stopped in front of them, Lakmeer recognized one of them. The fat frog looking fellow, who was the commander of the city watch. He was at the front of the party of the ten soldiers, and had the best horse among them. He got off his horse, his soldiers copied him and so did the man without uniform. Lakmeer also recognized him, he was the same person in the inn during lunch and from the inn they had stayed with Eddie, Othor and Henry. He is the one who recognized Lykos, for who he was.
Lykos had now stopped drinking, he was now staring at the
approaching party of soldiers with a puzzled expression. Sevron, the commander
of the city watch greeted them and said,” You two do recognize me, right?” Lakmeer
nodded. Then the commander said, in a changed expression,” I didn’t know then,
that I was talking to the notorious Lykos “bandit’s bane” banner, but later I
received this man over here, who told me you were in the city.” Lykos stood up
and so did Lakmeer, Lykos looked at the frog looking commander and said,” What
do you want Mr. frogs?” Lakmeer didn’t like this at all, the face of the
commander got red and he said angrily to one of his soldiers,” Take him!” Lakmeer
unsheathed his sword and said,” NO, you won’t.” Lakmeer looked at Lykos, he had
not unsheathed his sword, the soldiers and commander sevron laughed.
Lykos said angrily,” Put your sword back, BOY! never unsheathe your sword unless you mean to use it.” Lakmeer was confused,” But I do mean to use it.” Lykos got even angrier,” No! you don’t.” Lakmeer did not understand what was going on,” I cannot let them take you.” This time it was commander sevron who spoke,” Don’t be a fool boy, even if you two fought us you cannot beat us. You will die fighting. Do not interfere and I will be generous enough to let you leave, but I cannot let this killer leave. He has the blood of many innocents in his hands.” They must be mistaken, Lykos did not kill any innocent,” They were bandits, who killed innocents and his wife and daughter.” Lykos spoke this time,” Shut up boy, if they arrest you with me, I swear I am going to strangle you to death.” The commander’s soldiers took Lykos and put him in chains and took the wine skin and his sword, then they tied him to one of the horses. They rode while Lykos walked.
Before leaving, the commander came to Lakmeer and said,” Don’t be a fool boy, and do not try to save him. His life is forfeit, and I do not want to see you in the city, if you don’t leave before night I am going to arrest you and put your head on a spike in front of his cell before I do the same for him.” Saying this the commander left with his soldiers taking Lykos with them. Lakmeer sat by the wall, confused what had just happened and what he should do. Lakmeer had no idea what was going to happen next, he was alone, he was cold and he was in danger of getting arrested, if he stayed in the city for long. He couldn’t leave the city either, if he did, he would die of the cold, anyway. But he could take that risk. He was lucky enough to hunt a rabbit the other night, he might just get lucky again.
But then it crossed his mind, what about Lykos? He couldn’t leave him; they were going to chop off his head. Lykos was teaching him to be a better swordsman and above all he was his friend; though Lykos never spoke to him as a friend but he knew it in his heart. Lakmeer sat there by the wall for a long time, the sun was gone. There was just the last light of the sun, while the sky was getting darker by every second. The cold wind was blowing and Lakmeer hugged himself and started to shake due to the cold. He had known cold whole his life, the desert nights were the coldest, but he hadn’t felt cold like this before. He had no fire, no blankets and no clothes for the cold.
He knew that he was going to die today. He looked along the street, there was nobody at all. He began to think about the beautiful days of his childhood, the days he used to spend with his father. His hands were getting numb, he couldn’t feel his feet, he closed his eyes to let death take him over. But then he thought otherwise, he stood up and thought, I am a warrior, I will not die of a mere cold. He began to walk down the street, he had a thought to go to the inn and stay there for the night and think of a way to get Lykos out of the dungeons and then leave the city.
Lakmeer walked towards the inn but someone’s call stopped him. Somebody whistled at him, he looked around and saw someone standing on the roof of a shop, Lakmeer could not see his face but by his height and his figure Lakmeer could tell it was a young boy. He was gesturing him to follow him, Lakmeer avoided and began to walk, but the boy followed him from the roof, he jumped from roof to roof and followed Lakmeer. He disappeared when Lakmeer hit a turn to a smaller street. But just when Lakmeer thought it was over, somebody jumped in front of him, Lakmeer stepped back and unsheathed his sword and pointed the sword towards the unknown attacker, the unknown attacker was a young boy. The same boy from the roof, he had something in his hands. He sat down and rubbed a blade to a flint that gave a shiny spark and lit the torch he had put on the floor.
He was the skinniest boy he had ever seen. He was wearing a dirty jerkin and dirty pants, his arms seemed to have no meat and all skin and bones. He looked at Lakmeer with sunken eyes and said with a smile on his face,” Don’t kill me, I am not dangerous.” Lakmeer didn’t need to hear that, he could tell that by just looking at the boy. Lakmeer did not want to be rude, so he asked,” Who are you?”. The boy began to walk and gestured Lakmeer to follow him but Lakmeer didn’t follow him, the boy stopped and said,” The guards will find you if you roam around the city like that”. Lakmeer knew that the boy made sense but he had to find a way to save Lykos.
The boy then looked at Lakmeer and said,” I saw what happened with your friend, I know someone who can help you help him.” Lakmeer knew deep in his heart that he could not help Lykos alone, he didn’t even know where the dungeons were and where Lykos had been taken. How could he help someone when he didn’t even know where he is.
The boy didn’t need to be told he put the torch on the street’s floor and gestured Lakmeer to follow him. Lakmeer went after him, the boy was very fast, this instant he was walking on the ground, the other he was walking on the roofs and gesturing Lakmeer to climb up. Lakmeer went to the spot from where the boy had climbed up. There was a small empty space where a brick was a bit out from the wall. Lakmeer put his one foot on it and gave himself a boost with the other, he caught the roof of the low roofed shop, nearly lost his balance but quickly regained it. He went up the low roof and then climbed a higher one.
The wall was still way higher than them, it was thick enough for someone to walk on it with ease, and it was for the same purpose, the guards walked around the city on the walls. Luckily, there were no guards on the wall right now. The boy came to Lakmeer and said,” hurry up before the guards find us.” Lakmeer followed the boy. Lakmeer went beside him and asked,” what is your name?” the boy looked at him and smiled,” I am Ares, and you”? Lakmeer looked at his smile and replied, not with the same enthusiasm,” I am Lakmeer of the deserts.” The boy smiled again, Lakmeer gave him a faint smile.
He hurried forward and told Lakmeer to do the same,” Hurry up, we have to reach the place. It’s cold and the guards will soon be looking for you.” Lakmeer knew It was true so he hurriedly but carefully followed him. He didn’t want to fall off the roof, if he did, it meant instant death. The boy went to the populated region of the city, there were many houses in this part of the city. The boy then went to a window of a broken house. The window had a thick cloth on it, you couldn’t see what was on the other side but you could tell that a fire was burning on the other side and there were people talking, the sounds of children.
