Just when he put his guard down for a second the attacker hit his sword hand so hard with the side of his sword that he lost his grip on the sword and his sword fell down and then the attacker hit his chest with the hilt of his sword and Lakmeer fell down. His attacker brought the point of the sword at his throat and said,” You are a dead boy now.” Lakmeer didn’t move from his place and said,” That was a cheap trick.” Lykos took away the point and sheathed his sword and said,” What was, beating you to dirt?” Lakmeer stood up and dusted his clothes saying,” Well, it was much better than the last time.” Lykos didn’t seem to appreciate this statement of Lakmeer’s and said,” You don’t get to say that, dead boy. I am the teacher here. And I say it wasn’t good enough.” Lakmeer knew unless he defeated Lykos it would never be good enough and he would never defeat Lykos. Not with the skill gap between him and Lykos.
After what happened with Eddie, Lykos had decided to train Lakmeer to be a much better fighter. He even acted much better with him now, not the way he used to, always angry and puffed up for no reason. Lykos went to the fire to check if the rabbits were cooked and Lakmeer went to sit by the fire for some heat. It had been getting colder day by day, Lykos had said winter was here and it would get colder even than this and if they don’t reach the city soon they might as well die due to the cold. Lakmeer didn’t want to die of a cold, he would rather die fighting a great warrior in a war, not cold. The sun was down while there was the last light towards the far west where the sky met the earth and the sun went beneath the oceans.
The nights in the forest were mostly calm and silent, except sometimes the wolves nearby would take the silence away. Wolves were the other reason to sit in shifts through the nights, the first being bandits, Lykos had said that long ago when he was traveling in a caravan the wolves had silently bitten a man’s neck and then dragged him out of the party and eaten him, in the morning all that had remained had been his bones. This made the hair on Lakmeer’s neck stand, everything in this forest could kill you. The men, at least most of them, the snakes, the spiders and other insects, most of the all animals, even many types of plants that grew here could kill you if you by any chance ate them or even touched some, and none of these ways would be the way that Lakmeer would want to die.
Lykos cut a piece of meat from a rabbit with his dagger and nodded, which meant it was time to eat. Lakmeer took the other rabbit and began to eat it. He looked at the way Lykos ate his rabbit, like it was the best thing he had ever eaten,” It’s just a rabbit, cooked without any spices or oils.” Lykos kept eating his rabbit like he hadn’t heard Lakmeer while he looked at him, when finally, he stopped and said,” Rabbit is a feast, compared to what you get to eat in this forest this time of the year.” Lakmeer didn’t know what he meant, but then it felt like he did, rabbits also felt cold so, many would die in the cold weather while others must stay in the warmth of their burrows so it must be hard to find many rabbits around here, he ate his rabbit as he thought.
Then Lakmeer said,” What was the oddest thing you have eaten in this forest.” Lykos stopped and looked at Lakmeer and said,” I bet everything I have eaten in this forest is odd for you, but what was odd for me was eating a wolf, a real fat wolf that tried to attack me while I was sleeping. I killed it, shoving my dagger through its heart and listened to its breath until it stopped breathing and then I ate and drank all night, like a feast.” Lakmeer looked at him tearing his rabbit with his teeth like some wild beast, after he had stopped talking Lakmeer did the same.
After he was done with his rabbit Lykos took the skin out and began drinking, it had been given to him by Othor, and Lykos had kept it until the night the city would be near enough, and the other day they were going to reaching the city. Lakmeer unsheathed his sword and began to hone it with a whetstone, while Lykos drank. He kept doing his work and Lykos his, that suddenly something came up in his mind.” Why do you hate bandits so much?” he asked Lykos, he didn’t answer and kept staring at Lakmeer. Lakmeer knew the absurdity of his question so he asked it again with more detail,” It’s not like, I like them, but still. You could just kill them and leave them for the crows, the things you do to them after they are dead shows real anger, so why do you hate them.” Lakmeer saw Lykos’ face get darker and angrier, he looked at Lakmeer with loathing and said,” You mind your own business boy, or I will turn you into a eunuch and sell you for a slave.” Saying this he stood up and threw the empty skin on the side of the log and said,” You would shut up, if you knew what was right for you.” Saying this he stormed off into the darkness, probably to take a piss, he couldn’t sleep away from the fire in this cold so he would be back soon and he did come back and slept without looking at Lakmeer.
