THE GOLDEN HILT

The two riders were at a slow pace and both looked tired. One of them a muscular and tall man, with the looks of a fighter, his ugly face had been worsened due to the cut he had received from a fight of the past. The other a young boy with long silky hair and a leather armor with a golden hilt sword at his hips, who looked around the forest, he seemed both scared and tired. They were the only riders on the road to Gordor city and perhaps, they were the first to ride through these roads after a long time.

Lakmeer looked at his companion, who did not seem to be tired after all this bone breaking ride. Nothing seemed to tire him, it seemed he was made for journeys as these. While Lakmeer had not been on horseback for so long. They had stopped for breakfast, but when he insisted on stopping for lunch, he was told to eat the fruits he had with him. They had been together for three days; this was Lakmeer’s seventh day on the road. And it did not seem to go so well. There were no any friendly people who would speak to him about their journeys, only a large man who could not wait to kill the next person he saw, and who did not talk to Lakmeer except for insulting him or shouting at his mistakes. He did laugh from time to time but that was worse than the insults and the shouting, he would only laugh at Lakmeer not with him.

Lakmeer had thought to leave him, he had even once gotten up during the night to leave but he remembered the bandits, and he hadn’t been planning on getting tied to a tree again, so he had gone back to sleep. Since then it had not occurred to him to leave alone. This journey together did not seem to please his companion, who had at last decided to tell his name, after Lakmeer had asked for even he himself didn’t know how many times, Lykos was very angry when Lakmeer had brought forward the proposal of traveling together, and he could have said it by looking at Lykos’ face that he did not approve it. But he had not said much. As much as he was annoyed due to this companionship he wanted to make it worse for Lakmeer by annoying him through insults and non-stop bone wrenching rides.

Lakmeer listened to all his insults without complain, he still did not trust Lykos to be lenient with him. One reason could make him cut Lakmeer in half, and take the better sword and horse, leaving Lakmeer for the crows.

Lakmeer’s whole body was ached from the long journey so he called out at him,” Hey, can’t we stay here for the night?” Lykos stopped and Lakmeer went beside him, he looked in front of him without changing expression, which was always the annoyed look, he was annoyed at everything. He finally began speaking and said,” You can either stop, sleep here for the night or you could come with me. You choose.” Lakmeer did not say anything and urged his horse forward, he knew it was useless talking to him. But before he had even gone three steps he said in a hushed voice,” Stop” Lakmeer looked at him, it looked as if he was listening to something, Lakmeer tried to listen as well and he heard what Lykos was listening to, and said,” Riders.” Lykos did not say anything and rode inside the woods and Lakmeer did the same.

They hid behind thick bushes and looked at the riders coming, there were three of them. Two of them looked like fighters, with leather armor and swords at their hips. While the third man had a dagger, as was common for every traveler, but he did not look like a fighter at all, he was the oldest among them, maybe more than fifty while the others looked they were in late thirties, he was fat while the two were muscular, and he was not wearing any armor, not even the cheap leather armor. They had two mules in their party, they were carrying two large sacks full of, Lakmeer could not tell what.

One of them was singing a song, the younger one of the fighters, or was trying to sing one, because he did not seem to remember the lyrics, and wasn’t much of a singer. The other two seemed to be lost in the beauty of the forest, they looked around in awe like the trees were all made of Gold and the stones were rubies and diamonds, they were admiring everything they saw.

They were busy at their work when the singer came to a halt and looked at the ground. The other two, seeing their friend stop, stopped beside him. The fat one spoke to the singer, in a friendly way, his voice was muffled due to the distance but he could hear him well enough,” what is it Henry, why do you stop?” The other spoke in the same good behavior,” Yeah, I don’t think, we have arrived at the village yet.” The young man called Henry said in a suspicious manner,” These hoof prints, they are very fresh. Look at ours and look at these.” He urged his horse to step back and they all began to examine the prints.

“I don’t think they are good fighters, I will kill the ones with the sword, you can take the fat one.” Lakmeer was totally lost for words. He couldn’t kill these three, they seemed totally nice and harmless. He took Lykos’ sword hand stopping him taking his sword out and said,” No, they are good people we can’t just kill everyone we meet at the road.”

Lykos looked at him and said,” Alright then, go on and meet your friends.” Lakmeer stood up, went towards his horse which was hidden in the thicker part of the bushes, he heard Lykos telling him to stop but he didn’t listen. He then walked towards the road the reins of his horse in his hands, and called out in a friendly voice,” Greetings, friends. We are not hostile.” The three men looked at him, none of them went for their swords, and just kept looking at Lakmeer walking at their direction with his horse beside him. He signaled his companion to accompany him.

Both of them went to the unknown travelers. Lakmeer bowed respectfully while Lykos glared at them, Lakmeer introduced himself and his companion. Then they did the same, first the younger one who was singing told his name which he already knew as he had heard the fat man speak his name, the second was the fat man who called himself Eddie and the third man, the other fighter who was elder than the first said his name to be Othor. Then they asked him where he and his companion were off to, Lakmeer told them, ignoring Lykos’ looks of “Don’t tell them”

It turned out they were going to be companions for a short while,” We are going to take these supplies to the village that resides near here.” The fat man called Eddie said, Lykos looked at him suspiciously and said with his ever annoyed voice,” There are no villages here.” Eddie looked at Lykos with a friendly smile and said,” This village is supposed to be secret, because they don’t want no trouble, it contains the people of the war-stricken villages. They all live here, now armed to fight anyone who comes to destroy the village.” Lykos still did not seem to be satisfied but kept quiet.
